FINE CARPENTRY
This North End Halifax addition is another project with contractor Fotis Lambros Construction & Renovations Inc. for Abbott Brown Architects. Design features that really make it pop include an exterior of Western Red cedar shiplap siding and an the interior with Baltic Birch on walls and ceiling.
Row on row of 2" wide cedar siding with a 1/4" reveal meant careful levelling. Tightly mitring the corners that abut the galvanized metal edging required precise work. Time-consuming, but the result was worth it.
Here you get the full effect of the design using the narrow cedar siding. Imagine if the levelling had been off...
The walls and the ceiling of the addition are finished in Baltic birch. From a carpentry perspective, the challenges lay in maintaining the 1/16" spacing design feature between the birch sheets, and tight cuts around the windows and doors. At $120/sheet, mistakes would have been costly.
